Three things to know about Travel & RV Weather Tuesday 4 April


** Heads Up ** Another dangerous severe weather outbreak is expected late this afternoon through tonight. Area at greatest risk is between southeast Iowa southwards to western Arkansas. Anyone between I-35 and I-55/57 and north of I-20 is under the threat of severe thunderstorms and strong tornadoes.


  • High winds today for much of New Mexico, Colorado, west Texas and the Southern Plains. Dangerous dust storms possible.
  • Blizzard conditions continue for the Dakotas and northern Minnesota.
  • Greatest severe weather threat moves to Michigan and Indiana on Wednesday.

Pacific:

— Coastal OR and OR Cascades: Winter Weather Advisories continue this morning. 1-3 inches additional snowfall at lower elevations and up to 6 inches in the mountains. I-5, US-101 marginally impacted.

— Northeast NV: Winter Weather Advisory though this evening. Additional snowfall of 3-7 inches and wind gusts to 55 mph. US-93 impacted.

— South-central and east-central NV: Wind Advisories through this evening. Gusts to 50 mph. US-6, US-50, US-93 impacted.

Mountain:

— Southwest ID: Wind Advisory through this evening. Gusts to 55 mph. I-84 impacted.

— South-central ID: Winter Storm Advisory continues through this morning. 1-3 inches of snow and gusts to 50 mph. I-84 impacted.

— Much of south-central and southeast MT: Winter Storm Warnings through tonight. 5-10 inches of snow and wind gusts to 30 mph. I-90, I-94 impacted.

— Eastern, central and southern WY; north-central and UT: BLIZZARD WARNINGS (south-central and east-central WY) and Winter Storm Warnings through early tonight. Additional accumulations will range from a few inches in southern and southwest WY to 6-12 inches over UT to 1-2 feet in eastern WY. Wind gusts 40-50 mph. I-15, I-25, I-70, I-80, I-90 impacted.

— Much of western CO: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through late this evening. Additional accumulations of 4-8 inches and wind gusts to 60 mph. I-70 impacted.

— Central UT: Wind Advisory through mid-morning. Gusts to 45 mph. I-70 impacted.

— Most of NM and adjacent east-central AZ; south-central and southeast CO; far-west TX: High Wind Warnings and Advisories through late this evening. Gusts 55-75 mph. Blowing dust and suddenly reduced visibility will be a danger on the highways. I-10, I-25, I-40 impacted.

Central:

— Most of ND and SD; northern NE; western, central and northern MN: BLIZZARD WARNINGS (the Dakotas), Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through Wednesday night. Total snow accumulations 8-17 inches and wind gusts to 55 mph. I-29, I-35, I-90, I-94 impacted.

— Northern WI: ICE STORM WARNING (northwest) and Winter Weather Advisories this evening through Wednesday morning. Up to 1/4 inch of ice (freezing rain), one inch of snow and wind gusts to 50 mph.

— Southern, central and eastern KS; much of MO; western, central and northern OK; northern and western TX, including the Panhandle: High Wind Warnings (western sections) and Advisories through late this evening. Wind gusts will range from 45-55 mph in the eastern sections to 65-70 mph in the western sections. Blowing dust and suddenly reduced visibility will be a danger on the highways. I-10, I-20, I-27, I-35 I-40, I-44, I-70 impacted.

— Eastern TX; central and western LA; southwest AR: Wind Advisories this afternoon and tonight. Gusts to 40 mph. I-10, I-20, I-30, I-49 impacted.

— Central and northeast TX; eastern OK; most of AR; MO; eastern KS; southern, central and eastern IA; southern and central WI; IL; western IN: Widespread threat of severe weather late this afternoon into tonight. Strong, potentially long-tracked tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds are probable within this region. Dangerous nighttime tornadoes should also be expected. The regions at greatest risk are southeast IA and adjacent northwest IL. Also south-central MO and western AR. I-20, I-29, I-30, I-35, I-39, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-69, I-70, I-72, I-74, I-80, I-88, I-90 potentially impacted.

— Eastern IL; western and central KY; western and central TN; eastern AR; northern LA; northwest MS: Scattered severe thunderstorms Wednesday and Wednesday night. Greatest risk in the central time zone for large hail and strong tornadoes will be in eastern IL. However damaging wind gusts may occur anywhere in this region. I-20, I-22, I-24, I-40, I-49, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70, I-72, I-74, I-80 potentially impacted.

— Eastern TX; central and northern LA; southern and eastern AR; central and northern MS; northwest AL; central and western TN and KY: Slight risk of flash flooding Wednesday and Wednesday night. 2-4 inches of rain possible with individual showers and thunderstorms producing rainfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour. I-10, I-20, I-22, I-24, I-40, I-45, I-49, I-55, I-65, I-75 potentially impacted.

— Southeast TX and adjacent western LA: Slight risk of flash flooding Thursday due heavy rain showers and thunderstorms. I-10, I-20, I-37, I-45, I-49 potentially impacted.

— South TX: Chance for isolated severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. Large hail is the primary threat. I-10, I-35, I-37 potentially impacted.

Eastern:

— MI eastern Upper Peninsula: ICE STORM WARNING this evening through Wednesday afternoon. Up to 1/4 inch of ice (freezing rain), one inch of snow and wind gusts to 50 mph. I-75 impacted.

— MI central and western Upper Peninsula: Winter Weather Advisories this evening through Wednesday afternoon. Up to 2 inches snow and a glaze of ice. Gusts to 45 mph. US-6 impacted.

— MI Lower Peninsula; IN; OH; KY; western and northwest PA; western NY: Scattered severe thunderstorms expected Wednesday. Greatest threats for strong tornadoes and large hail will be over MI (Lower Peninsula), IN, and northwest OH. Damaging wind gusts may occur anywhere in this region. I-64, I-65, I-69, I-70, I-71, I-74,I-75, I-76, I-77, I-79, I-80, I-81, I-86, I-90, I-94, I-96, PA & OH Turnpikes, IN Toll Road, NY Thruway potentially impacted.

— NJ; eastern PA; DE; most of MD; DC; most of VA; western NC: Strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday will pose a marginal risk for large hail, damaging winds, and possibly a tornado. I-40, I-64, I-66, I-66, I-70, I-76, I-78, I-80, I-81, I-83, I-84, I-85, I-95, PA and NJ Turnpikes, Garden State Parkway potentially impacted.

— Much of central and southern GA; north-central FL Peninsula: Dense Fog Advisories through mid-morning. I-10, I-16, I-75, I-85 impacted.
