Three things to know about Travel & RV Weather Thursday 13 April


  • Tropical-like disturbance moves onshore this morning along the Mississippi / Alabama coast, bringing coastal flooding, locally heavy rains, squally winds and the chance for brief tornadoes.
  • Snow today for the Northern Rockies. Snow moves into the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
  • Chance of severe thunderstorms over the Plains today and Friday, and Saturday over the Mid-Mississippi Valley.

Pacific:

— Central CA southern and central Sacramento Valley: Wind Advisory continues through this morning. Gusts to 45 mph. I-5, I-80, CA-99 impacted.

Southern CA San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego Country Mountains; Apple, Lucerne, Coachella Valleys; San Diego County Deserts: Wind Advisories continue through midday today. Gusts to 60 mph. I-8, I-10 impacted.

Mountain:

— Portions of central MT; much of north-central and northeast MT: Flood Watches and Advisories through Friday evening for rapid snowmelt due to warm temperatures. I-15, I-90 potentially impacted.

Portions of southeast ID: Wind Advisory through this afternoon. Gusts to 50 mph. I-84 impacted.

Much of southwest, central and northeast MT; east-central and southeast ID; northwest WY: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories tonight through Thursday night. Additional accumulations generally 3-5 inches except up to a foot in higher passes and mountains. I-15, I-90, US-89 impacted.

Portions of southeast and south-central WY in the Laramie, Sierra Madre, and Snowy Mountain Ranges: Winter Weather Advisories tonight and Friday. 3-9 inches snow. I-80 impacted.

— Eastern AZ; most of NM, CO and WY: Widespread strong winds this afternoon and evening, Gusts generally 30-40 mph with gusts 35-50 mph over WY. I-10, I-19, I-25, I-40, I-70, I-76, I-80, I-90 impacted.

— NM: Strong wind gusts Friday afternoon and evening. Gusts 30-40 mph. I-10, I-25, I-40 impacted.

Central:

Much of central and southern ND; adjacent west-central MN: FLOOD WARNINGS through Friday. Flooding from warm temperatures and snowmelt occurring in much of the Red and James River Valleys. Numerous roads closed. I-29, I-94 potentially impacted.

— East-central MN; northwest WI: Flood Advisories through midday today due to warm temperatures and snowmelt. I-35 potentially impacted.

— Northern KS; central and eastern NE; northwest IA; southeast SD; southwest MN: Strong winds this afternoon and evening. Gusts 30-45 mph. I-29, I-35, I-70, I-80, I-90 impacted.

Western NE; western KS and adjacent eastern CO; OK and TX Panhandles: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible this evening. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. I-27, I-40, I-70, I-76, I-80 potentially impacted.

Southeast NE; central and eastern KS; north-central OK: Severe thunderstorms capable of all hazards, including very large hail, possible Friday evening into Friday night. I-35, I-40, I-44, I-70 potentially impacted.

Southwest IL; southeast MO; central and eastern AR; far-west TN; northern LA; northwest MS: Severe thunderstorms capable of large to very large hail and damaging gusts are possible on Saturday. I-20, I-22, I-30, I-40, I-44, I-49, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70 potentially impacted.

Western FL Panhandle; southeast AL; adjacent southwest GA: TORNADO WATCH through early this afternoon. A couple of tornadoes, quarter-sized hail and wind gusts to 70 mph all possible. Any tornadoes will likely spin up, then dissipate very quickly, so there will be little if any lead time for warnings. I-10 potentially impacted.

MS, AL and extreme western FL Panhandle coasts: Strong gusty winds accompany the tropical-like disturbance as it makes landfall on the Gulf Coast this morning. Gusts 40-50 mph are possible for a few hours, especially between Biloxi MS and Pensacola FL. This area of small but strong winds will move north, then northwest today through southern AL, then into central MS before dissipating. I-10, I-59, I-65 impacted.

— Southern coastal LA; southeast LA and southern MS: Heavy rains from a disturbance in the northern Gulf will produce 1-3 inches of rain and a chance of localized flash flooding today. I-10, I-12, I-55, I-59 potentially impacted.

Central and southern AL; FL Panhandle: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible today, associated with the tropical-like disturbance moving onshore. Chance of damaging winds and brief tornadoes. Any tornadoes will likely spin up, then dissipate very quickly, so there will be little if any lead time for warnings. I-10, I-20, I-65, I-69, I-85 potentially impacted.

Eastern:

Southern GA; northern FL; FL East Coast: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible today. associated with the tropical-like disturbance moving onshore. Chance of damaging winds and brief tornadoes. Any tornadoes will likely spin up, then dissipate very quickly, so there will be little if any lead time for warnings. I-4, I-10, I-75, I-95 potentially impacted.

— Southern VA; most of NC and SC: Isolated, marginally severe thunderstorms possible Friday into Friday night. Damaging winds and hail will be the primary hazards. I-20, I-26, I-40, I-74, I-77, I-85, I-95 potentially impacted.
