Weather for RVers and travelers Wednesday 24 July 2024


  • Hazardous heat wave continues for much of interior California, the Great Basin, into the northern Rockies and northern Plains. Temperatures will ease back this weekend.
  • Flooding rains today along the southeast Texas coast; heavy rains Thursday across the Carolinas.
  • Strong to marginally severe thunderstorms possible today across the southern Great Lakes region into the Northeast and southwards to the Mid-Atlantic States.

These are the most significant weather impacts to RV travel over the next two to three days. I do not list every area of rain, showers, or breezy winds. It would be exhausting (for both of us!).


Weather Impacts Pacific Time Zone:

— Portions of north-central WA: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings this afternoon and evening. Wind gusts to 35 mph. US-97 impacted.

— Portions of central WA; north-central OR and eastern Columbia Gorge: Strong winds this afternoon through tonight. Wind gusts 30-40 mph. I-82, I-84, I-90, US-2, US-12, US-97 impacted.

— Much of eastern, southeast and south-central OR; northeast CA: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings this afternoon into tonight. Wind gusts 30-40 mph. I-84, US-20, US-26, US-95, US-395 impacted.

— Much of east-central and southeast OR; northern NV: Excessive Heat Warnings and Advisories today and Wednesday. High temperatures 97-104 deg F.

Eastern OR; northwest NV: Locally strong thunderstorms today may produce damaging wind gusts. I-84, US-20, US-26, US-95 potentially impacted.

Northern CA Sacramento Valley; much of central CA west of the Sierra Nevada: Excessive Heat Warnings and Advisories through Thursday. High temperatures 100-111 deg F.

— East-central CA including Mono Lake; portions of west-central NV: Flood Watch this afternoon through this evening. Multiple, heavy, slow-moving rain showers and thunderstorms may result in flooding of burn scars, creeks and streams, and other flood-prone locations. US-6, US-95, US-395 potentially impacted.

— Southern CA foothills and mountains away from the immediate coast: Heat Advisories today and Thursday. High temperatures 90 to 106 deg F.

Interior southern CA; and southeast CA interior deserts and east of the Sierra Nevada, including the Mojave Desert and Death Valley National Park; southern NV; adjacent northwest AZ: Excessive Heat Warnings through Friday. High temperatures 107 – 118 deg F with temperatures reaching the mid-120’s deg F in Death Valley NP. I-8, I-10, I-15, I-40, US-395, CA-14, CA-58 impacted.

Weather Impacts Mountain Time Zone:

Much of central and southern ID; much of western MT: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings this afternoon into early tonight. Wind gusts outside of thunderstorms up to 30 mph. Outflow wind gusts from thunderstorms may reach 60 mph. I-15, I-84, I-86, I-90, US-2, US-12, US-93, US-95, US-191, US-287 impacted.

Much of central and southwest ID; portions of southwest and central MT: Locally strong thunderstorms today may produce damaging wind gusts. I-15, I-84, I-90 potentially impacted.

— Northwest MT; portions of central ID: Heat Advisories today. High temperatures generally 95-100 deg F.

— Much of central and eastern MT; northeast WY: Excessive Heat Warnings and Advisories through Thursday. High temperatures 100-108 deg F. I-90, I-94, US-2 US-12 impacted.

— Much of southern ID; northwest UT; central UT I-70 corridor: Excessive Heat Warnings (I-84 corridor southwest ID) and Advisories today. High temperatures 100-104 deg F.

— Portions of west-central and northwest AZ: Excessive Heat Warnings through this evening. High temperatures 106-117 deg F. I-40, US-93 impacted.

Portions of south-central AZ: Blowing Dust Advisory this afternoon through late this evening. Visibility may drop to 1/4 to 1 mile in blowing dust. I-8, I-10, I-17, I-19 potentially impacted.

Much of central and southern AZ: Locally strong thunderstorms today may produce damaging wind gusts. I-8, I-10, I-17, I-19, I-40 potentially impacted.

Weather Impacts Central Time Zone:

— Western and central ND; western SD: Heat Advisories today and Thursday. High temperatures up to 107 deg F.

Southeast IA; northern IL: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible today. Wind and hail are the primary hazards. I-39, I-55, I-57, I-72, I-74, I-80 potentially impacted.

Southeast TX and adjacent coastal southwest LA: Flood Watches continue through this evening. An additional 2-3 inches of rainfall is possible. I-10, I-45 impacted.

Weather Impacts Eastern Time Zone:

— Northern ME: Dense Fog Advisories through mid-morning. I-95, US-1 impacted.

— Central NC; central SD: Flood Watches today and Thursday. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches is probable. Heaviest rains will be tonight and Thursday. I-20, I-26, I-40, I-73, I-85, I-95 potentially impacted.

Northern OH; western and northern PA; NY; NJ; DE; MD Eastern Shore; much of eastern and southern VA; north-central and northeast NC: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts this afternoon and evening. Hail is also possible in NY. I-40, I-64, I-70, I-71, I-73, I-75, I-76, I-77, I-78, I-79, I-80, I-81, I-83, I-84, I-85, I-86, I-87, I-88, I-90, I-95, NJ, PA and OH Turnpikes, NY Thruway potentially impacted.

Southeast PA; southern NJ; central and eastern MD; DC; DE; northern VA: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms on Thursday may produce damaging wind gusts along the I-95 corridor from northern VA to central NJ. I-66, I-70, I-76, I-78, I-83, I-95, NJ Turnpike potentially impacted.
