Weather for RVers and travelers Sunday 14 July 2024


  • Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across the High and Northern Plains into the Upper Midwest today.
  • Severe thunderstorms move into the Great Lakes region and Northeast on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Hot and humid conditions continue throughout much of the Central and Eastern US through mid-week.
  • A hot week upcoming for the Southwest deserts.

These are the most significant weather impacts to RV travel over the next two to three days. I do not list every area of rain, showers, or breezy winds. It would be exhausting (for both of us!).


Weather Impacts Pacific Time Zone:

— Much of central and eastern WA and OR; northern ID: Heat Advisories through this evening. High temperatures 95-105 deg F.

— Central and south-central WA; north-central OR: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings today. Wind gusts up to 30 mph. I-82, I-84, I-90, US-2, US-12, US-97, US-395 impacted.

— South-central, southeast and east-central OR; most of NV; northern, northeast and northwest CA: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings this afternoon and evening. Hot and dry conditions, with high fire potential in dry lightning strikes. Strong wind gusts from thunderstorm outflows. I-5, I-80, I-84, US-6, US-20, US-26, US-50, US-93, US-95, US-97, US-395 impacted.

— CA Sierra Nevada including Yosemite National Park; eastern CA east of the Sierras and north of Death Valley; San Bernardino and Riverside County Mountains and High Desert to the east: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings Saturday and Sunday for dry lighting. Light winds except strong gusts near thunderstorm outflows. I-5, I-10, I-15, I-80, US-6, US-50, US-395, CA-14, CA-58, CA-120 potentially impacted.

— Much of interior central CA, west of the Sierra Nevada: Excessive Heat Warning today. High temperatures may reach 105 deg F.

— Southeast CA deserts: Excessive Heat Warning today. Afternoon temperatures 101-109 deg F.

Weather Impacts Mountain Time Zone:

— Southern ID; most of UT: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings today for dry thunderstorms with gusty outflow winds. I-15, I-70, I-80, I-84, I-86, US-30, US-40, US-50, US-89, US-93, US-191 potentially impacted.

— South-Central and southeast MT; north-central, central and southeast WY; much of eastern CO: Heat Advisories today. High temperatures mostly 96-105 deg F.

— Portions of eastern UT; northwest NM and central NM, including Albuquerque: Heat Advisories today. High temperatures 100-107 deg F.

— Portions of east-central and southwest WY; adjacent far-west NE: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings today. Some wind gusts may reach 30 mph. I-25, I-80 potentially impacted.

Central and southeast AZ: Isolated severe thunderstorms with wind gusts are possible today and again on Monday. I-8, I-10, I-17, I-19 potentially impacted.

Weather Impacts Central Time Zone:

North-central and northeast IL, including Chicago: FLOOD WARNING (I-90 corridor from Rockford to the east) and Flood Watch this morning. Between 2-4 inches of rain fell overnight and an additional 1/2 of rain is possible in more thunderstorms. I-39, I-55, I-57, I-80, I-90, I-94 potentially impacted.

Much ND; central and eastern SD; western MN: Strong to severe thunderstorms expected today. Large hail and severe winds gusts are possible across the Dakotas. I-29, I-94 potentially impacted.

— Southern SD; NE; KS; northern OK; western, central and southern IA; western, central and southern IL; western KY; MO, I-40 corridor of AR: Heat Advisories today and Monday. Heat index values generally between 102-110 deg F.

Southeast MN; central and northeast IA; central and southern WI; northern IL: Strong to severe thunderstorms possible on Monday. I-35, I-39, I-41, I-43, I-55, I-57, I-80, I-88, I-90, I-94 potentially impacted.

— Western and central NE; KS; much of MO; much of IL: Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday. I-29, I-35, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70, I-72, I-74, I-80 potentially impacted.

— Eastern LA; southern MS and AL; FL Panhandle: Heat Advisories today. Heat index values may reach 110 deg F.

Weather Impacts Eastern Time Zone:

Northwest IN; southern MI: Strong to severe thunderstorms possible Monday. I-69, I-80, I-90, I-94, I-96, IN Toll Road potentially impacted.

— Most of IN; OH; western, central and northern PA; most of NY; VT; NH; ME: Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday. I-64, I-65, I-69, I-70, I-71, I-74, I-75, I-76, I-77, I-79, I-80, I-81, I-86, I-87, I-88, I-89, I-90, I-91, I-93, I-95, I-99, NY Thruway, OH and PA Turnpikes, IN Toll Road potentially impacted.

— Most of MA and CT; RI; NY lower Hudson Valley, NYC and Long Island; NJ; central, south-central and southeast PA; DC; DC; much of MD; northern VA: Excessive Heat Watches and Heat Advisories Monday and Tuesday. Heat Index values 104-110 deg F.

— Central and eastern NC; eastern SC; coastal GA; coastal northeast FL: Heat Advisories today. Heat index values 108-112 deg F.

— FL Panhandle: Heat Advisory today. Heat index values around 110 deg F;

— Southern FL: Heat Advisory today. Heat index values 107-111 deg F.
