Extended outlooks are more general in nature and higher level than the daily short term forecasts. Beyond a week, there is often significant uncertainty in the location and intensity of specific weather events. I will note where there is less, or greater, confidence than normal in these extended outlooks.

Big Picture this week into next weekend:
- Tuesday leads off with big storms on both coasts
- Major storm will bring more widespread flooding to California and feet of snow to the Sierras.
- Strong nor’easter brings 1-2 feet of snow and wind to much of New York and interior New England
- The California storm will be with us through the end of the week
- It tracks through the Four Corners States Wednesday, the Plains on Thursday and into the Great Lakes on Friday.
- Snow for the Upper Midwest and snow likely along the Front Range on Wednesday and Thursday along I-25 from Cheyenne to Albuquerque. Windy too.
- California stays mostly dry Wednesday through Saturday.
- Maybe some severe weather Thursday for eastern Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley.
- Weekend rains for Florida.
- Warmer than normal in New England. Near average temperatures over south Texas. Most of the rest of the country will be cooler than normal.
- Wetter than normal (again) for the Rockies and all points west. Wet also for the Great Lakes, New York and New England, and Florida.
- Drier than normal across the Plains, the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic region.
Outlook for late March and early April (a 2-4 week outlook is by definition low confidence!):
- Slowly drying out across the West, but occasional days of rain and snow continue.
- Some hints that the Southeast will have a wet end to March.
- Stubbornly cool temperatures remain locked in over the US through the end of the month (yes, the Groundhog is laughing at us).
- Perhaps April will start off warmer than average across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
- But the West remains cooler than average. Given the snowpack, no one wants a hot spring and the flooding that would create.
Details (courtesy of the National Weather Service):
- will be back on Tuesday the 14th
