Three things to know about weather for RVers and travelers Thursday 30 November


  • Severe thunderstorms with possible tornadoes across southeast Texas today; severe threat moves into the Deep South Friday and Saturday.
  • Significant, long-duration winter storms move into the Pacific Northwest and through much of the Rockies starting today and continuing through the weekend. Heavy snow and strong winds.
  • Heavy rain along the Gulf Coast. Rain also for the Southern Plains into the Mid-Mississippi Valley; Iowa could see some freezing rain tonight and Friday morning.

These are the most significant weather impacts to RV travel over the next two to three days. I do not list every area of rain, showers, or breezy winds. It would be exhausting (for both of us!). Please check out the animations and graphics for a good depiction of the weather along your route.

Pacific:

— Northwest WA Olympic Mountains: Winter Weather Advisory late tonight through Saturday afternoon. Snow above 2000 feet. 10-16 inches accumulation.

— WA and OR Cascades: Winter Storm Warnings, Watches and Advisories tonight through Saturday night. Snow levels will vary between 2000 feet in northern WA to 3000 feet in southern OR. Snow accumulations will range from 4-9 inches at lower elevations to 1-3 feet above 4500 feet. Winds may gust as high as 50 mph. I-90, US-12, US-26, US-97 impacted.

— Northern ID: Winter Storm Watch Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Snow accumulations will range from 4-8 inches in the valleys to 1-2 feet in the mountains. I-90 impacted.

— Portions of central, east-central and northeast OR; adjacent southeast WA in the Blue Mountains: Winter Storm Warnings (Blue Mountains) and Advisories early Friday morning through early Sunday morning. Snow accumulations generally 3-5 inches except 10-20 inches in the Blue Mountains. Wind gusts 30-40 mph. I-84, US-20, US-26, US-395 impacted.

— Much of central, northern and northeast NV: Winter Storm Warnings (Ruby Mountains, Humbolt Range) and Advisories this evening through Sunday morning. 1-5 inches snow in the valleys and up to 6-18 inches of snow above 6000 feet. Winds may gust to 45 mph. I-80, US-50, US-93 impacted.

— CA Central Coast: Strong winds this afternoon and tonight. Gusts 30-35 mph. US-101, CA-1 impacted.

— Southern CA Mojave Desert slopes: Wind Advisory this afternoon through Friday morning. Gusts to 55 mph. US-395, CA-14, CA-58 impacted.

— Southern CA San Diego County Deserts: Strong winds today and tonight along the I-8 corridor. Wind gusts to 40 mph. I-8 impacted.

Mountain:

— Northwest MT midday Friday through Wednesday: Strong winds will be persistent across the Rocky Mountain Front well into next week. Strongest winds likely Saturday and again Monday. I-15, US-2 impacted.

— Much of southwest and southeast ID: Winter Storm Watches and Advisories starting this afternoon and continuing through Sunday. 1-2 feet or more of snow expected. I-84, US-20, US-26, US-95 impacted.

— Portions of north-central, central and east-central AZ: Winter Weather Advisories above 7000 feet this evening through Saturday morning. Snow accumulations 1-6 inches except 6-12 inches above 7500 feet. Wind gusts 30-35 mph. I-17, I-40, US-89, US-191 impacted.

— Portions of west-central and southwest CO; northwest and west-central NM; higher elevations of central NM: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories this afternoon through Saturday morning. Snow accumulations 3-6 inches except 6-12 inches above 9000 feet. I-40, US-60, US-64, US-491, US-550 impacted.

— Much of western and northwest NM; portions of central and north-central NM: Winter Storm Watches and Advisories late tonight through Friday. 2-6 inches snow expected except 8-14 inches above 9000 feet. I-25, I-40 impacted.

— Southeast NM and adjacent southwest TX: Wind Advisory today. Gusts to 55 mph. US-180, US-285, US-380 impacted.

— Southeast NM and adjacent TX Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains: High Wind Warning today. Gusts to 75 mph. US-180 impacted.

— Portions of west-central and southern NM: Strong winds today starting late this morning. Gusts 30-45 mph. I-10, I-25 impacted.

Central:

— Southwest TX: Wind Advisory late this morning through this evening. Gusts to 55 mph. I-10, I-20 impacted.

— Southern and southeast IA: Winter Weather Advisory for a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain tonight through Friday morning. 1-2 inches of snow and a coating of ice possible. I-35, I-80 impacted.

— Eastern OK; northern AR; much of MO and IL: Bands of moderate rain move through this region tonight. I-35, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70, I-72, I-74 impacted.

— Eastern AR; northern MS; western TN: Wind Advisories tonight. Gusts to 40 mph. I-22, I-40, I-55 impacted.

— South-central and southwest LA; adjacent eastern TX: Wind Advisories late this morning through early tonight. Gusts to 40 mph. I-10, I-49 impacted.

— Southern LA and adjacent southeast TX: Heavy rains this afternoon through tonight. Slight risk of flash flooding. I-10, I-12, I-49 impacted.

— TX Coast: Strong winds this afternoon. Gusts 30-40 mph. I-10, I-37, I-45, I-69 impacted.

— Southeast TX and adjacent southwest LA: Scattered storms, some severe, will be possible today. A few tornadoes are expected, along with hail and isolated damaging wind gusts. I-10, I-45 potentially impacted.

— Eastern TX; southeast OK; southwest AR; western and central LA: Scattered storms, some strong to severe, are possible today. Primary hazards are hail along with a few strong wind gusts. I-10, I-20, I-30, I-35, I-45, I-49 potentially impacted.

— Southern and southeast LA; southern and central MS; southern and central AL; western FL Panhandle: Scattered thunderstorms, some severe, are possible Friday. Isolated tornadoes and damaging winds gusts are the primary hazards. I-10, I-12, I-20, I-49, I-55, I-59, I-65, I-85 potentially impacted.

— Southern MS; southern AL; FL Panhandle: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible Saturday. I-10, I-65 potentially impacted.

Eastern:

— Central and eastern TN: Strong winds Friday morning through early afternoon. Gusts generally 30-40 mph except higher along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

— Southwest GA; central FL Panhandle: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible Saturday. I-10, I-16, I-75 potentially impacted.

— Western and northern NY: Strong winds this evening and early tonight. Gusts to 35 mph. I-81, I-86, I-87, I-90, NY Thruway impacted.



Overall weather impacts to RV travel Thursday afternoon 30 November. Impacts range from level 1 (Marginal) to level 5 (Critical). Severe thunderstorms over southeast Texas, strong winds over southwest Texas and southern New Mexico, and snow over central and northwest New Mexico and the Oregon Cascades.
