**High Impact Weather Day today ** Widespread significant severe weather outbreak likely today over a large part of the Lower- and Mid-Mississippi Valley. Blizzard conditions continue over eastern Montana and North Dakota.


  • Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, numerous strong tornadoes and flash flooding are possible from the Mississippi River Valley into the Midwest.
  • Heavy snow and blizzard conditions will continue in parts of the Northern Plains.
  • Strong gusty winds will continue in portions of the Southern and Central High Plains into the Southwest

Pacific:

— Western OR, adjacent southwest WA, and northwest CA: Winter Storm Warnings (Cascades) and Advisories through midday today. Several additional inches of accumulation possible. Snow levels 1000-2000 feet. I-5, US-101 impacted.

— Southeast OR: Winter Weather Advisory tonight and Thursday morning. 2-4 inches snow expected.

CA Northern and Central Sierra Nevada above 4500 feet: Winter Weather Advisories late this afternoon through midday Thursday. 6-12 inches snow expected. I-80, US-50 impacted.

— Northeast NV: Winter Weather Advisory through midday today. 1-4 inches additional accumulation possible. I-80 impacted.

Mountain:

Eastern MT and adjacent northeast WY: Blizzard Warnings, Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories continue through this evening. Accumulations range from a few additional inches up to 5-12 more inches along the ND border. Wind gusts to 40 mph. I-90, I-94 impacted.

— North-central and central CO Rockies; adjacent south-central WY: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories today. Up to 2-6 additional inches of snow. Winds gusting 40-55 mph. Warning area bounded by I-80 to the north and I-70 to the south. I-25 not impacted by these warnings.

Central, northeast and east-central NM: High Wind Warnings (central) and Advisories today. Gusts 50-60 mph. I-25, I-40 impacted.

Central:

Most of ND except southeast corner of state; northwest and north-central SD; northwest MN: Blizzard Warnings (ND, SD), Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through Thursday evening. Additional snow accumulations range from 4-8 inches in MN to 10-17 inches over much of ND. Wind gusts to 50 mph. I expect most highways will be closed or impassable. I-29 I-94 impacted. I-90 in western SD on southern edge of warned area.

Most of SD except far-western portion of state; west-central MN: High Wind Warnings and Advisories through Thursday evening. Gusts 50-60 mph. I-29, I-90, I-94 impacted.

West TX at and just south of the I-10/I-20 split: High Wind Warnings through this afternoon. Gusts to 60 mph. I-10, I-20 impacted.

— Parts of central KY; western TN; eastern AR; northern MS: Wind Advisories today and tonight. Wind gusts 40-45 mph. I-24, I-40, I-55, I-65 impacted.

Southeast WI; southwest MI; IL; IN; western OH; the southeastern half of MO; western and central KY; most of TN; eastern OK; eastern TX; AR; LA; MS; western AL: Numerous severe thunderstorms are likely mid-morning through this evening. Very large hail, widespread damaging winds and potentially strong tornadoes are the major threats. Some areas may also see flash flooding. Area of greatest threat lies along an axis from Chicago to Memphis to Baton Rouge, and especially across the mid-Mississippi Valley.
