Travel & RV Weather Forecast Friday 21 October


** Heads Up ** RVers in or traveling through the Southwest, Rockies, Great Basin or Inter-Mountain West this weekend must prepare for high winds and winter conditions. Hazards will range from dust storms in the southern California deserts, heavy mountain snows above 7000 feet, and wind gusts greater than 60 mph over much of the Rockies. Travel in this region is best avoided Saturday and Sunday if possible.


  • Significant autumn storm poised to come ashore in the Pacific Northwest today.
  • This storm will bring a variety of wind and winter hazards this weekend from southern California and the Southwest, northwards to Idaho and Montana.
  • Good weather for RV travel this weekend in the central and eastern U.S.

Pacific:

— Central OR Cascades above 4000 feet: Winter Weather Advisory late tonight through late Saturday evening. 4-8 inches snow expected.

— South-central OR: Wind Advisory this afternoon through late this evening. Gusts to 45 mph. US-395 impacted.

— Northern NV: Wind Advisory from midday today through midday Saturday. The strongest winds will occur tonight and early Saturday. Gusts to 45 mph. I-80 impacted.

— Eastern NV: Wind Advisory from this evening through Saturday evening. Gusts to 45 mph.

Southern NV: High Wind Warnings and Advisories midday Saturday through Sunday morning. Gusts 50-60 mph. I-15 impacted.

Much of east-central CA, southern and southeast CA, to the east of the coastal mountains: High Wind Warnings, Watches and Advisories from late Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Wind gusts 40-65 mph. Significant dust may be raised, greatly and suddenly restricting visibility while driving. I-5 (Grapevine), I-8, I-10, I-15, I-40, US-395, CA-58 all impacted.

Mountain:

Portions of northwest, western, central and south-central MT; central and east-central ID: Winter Storm Warnings and Watches starting this evening and continuing through Sunday. Heavy snow generally above 7000 feet. Accumulations may range from 6-12 inches below 7000 feet to 1-2 feet above 7000 feet. I-15, I-90 impacted.

Western WY and adjacent southeast ID: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories this evening through Sunday morning. Snow accumulations range from 12-18 inches in the Tetons, Gros Ventre and Wind River Ranges and over Yellowstone, to 6-12 inches over the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges. Wind Gusts 35-40 mph.

— Southeast ID: Wind Advisories this afternoon and evening. Gusts to 40 mph. I-15 impacted.

Southeast, central and south-central WY; WY Wind River Range: High Wind Warnings and Watches for Saturday. Wind gusts 60-80 mph. Travel with most RVs will become very hazardous. I-25, I-80 highly impacted.

Northeast, central and southwest UT: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories Saturday and Sunday. 2-6 inches snow at the low elevations and 6-18 inches in the mountains. I-15, I-70, I-80, I-84 impacted.

Northeast, central and southwest UT; western and central CO; central and northern NM: High winds will be prevalent Saturday midday through evening across much of this region. Expect the National Weather Service to issue additional advisories for these winds and warnings today and tonight. Gusts 45-60 mph will be common. I-15, I-25, I-40, I-70, I-80 impacted.

Northern and central AZ: Wind Advisories midday Saturday through midday Sunday. Gusts 45–55 mph. I-17, I-40 impacted.

Central:

— No significant weather impacts to RV travel today or Saturday.

Eastern:

— No significant weather impacts to RV travel today or Saturday.
