  • A series of Pacific storms will bring periods of heavy low elevation rain and heavy mountain snow to the Western U.S. through the Christmas weekend.
  • Flash flooding possible over southern California.
  • Expect significant rains tonight and Friday over much of Arizona.
  • High winds will make for difficult travel today and Friday across the central and southern Rockies.

Here’s the long-range travel & RV weather outlook (updated last evening)

— WA Olympic and Cascade mountains; OR Cascade mountains: Winter Storm Warnings through Thursday afternoon above 3000-4000 feet. Warnings end this morning in the WA Cascades. Total snow accumulations generally 5-15 inches. I-90 impacted.

— Southeast WA, northeast OR: Winter Weather Advisory today above 4000 feet. 3-8 inches of snow possible along with gusts to 40 mph. I-84 impacted.

— Southwest OR, adjacent northwest CA: Winter Storm Watches and Advisories Friday morning through Monday morning above 1500 feet. Snow accumulations may range from a few inches at 1500 feet to a few feet at and above 3500 feet. I-5 will likely be highly impacted.

— Northern CA: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through Sunday afternoon. Heaviest snows will be Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Expect 5-10 inches of snow at lower elevations and 3 or more feet of snow at pass levels. Winds could gust to 50 mph. I-5 will be highly impacted.

— CA Sierra Nevada Range: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through Sunday afternoon. Heaviest snows will be Thursday through Sunday. Snow levels start at 4500-5000 feet. Total accumulations of 3-4 feet likely with some places seeing as much as 9 feet of snow. Winds could gust 50-70 mph. I-80, US-50 highly impacted and will likely become impassible.

— Coastal southern CA: Flood Watch through Friday morning. I-8, I-10 potentially impacted.

— Southern CA east slopes of the San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego County mountains: Wind Advisory Friday. Gusts to 60 mph. I-8, I-10 impacted.

— Much of AZ: Moderate to heavy rains tonight and Friday. No warnings issued currently, but be very cautious near dry stream beds that may fill rapidly with rising waters.

— Northwest MT, northern ID: Winter Weather Advisory through this morning. Several additional inches snow at pass level, perhaps mixed with freezing rain. Gusts to 25 mph. I-90 impacted.

— South-central ID, north of I-84: Winter Storm Warnings through Saturday afternoon. 10-20 inches snow likely, with several feet at higher elevations.

— Southwest ID south of I-84: Wind Advisory today. Gusts to 50 mph.

— East-central and northeast NV above 5000 feet: Winter Weather Advisories through Friday morning. Accumulations. 2-4 inches below 5800 feet and 4-10 inches at higher elevations. I-80, US-50 impacted.

— South-central MT Livingston area and Beartooth Foothills. Wind Advisory through Friday morning. Gusts to 60 mph. I-90, US-191 impacted.

— Western and southern WY; northeast and north-central UT; adjacent MT and ID: Winter Storm Warnings this evening through Friday night. 5-15 inches snow likely for the valleys, significantly higher amounts in the mountains. Gusts 50-70 mph. I-15, I-80, US-89 impacted.

— Central and southwest UT: Winter Weather Advisories through Saturday morning. 5-15 inches snow possible. I-15, I-70 impacted.

— Portions of west-central, central, eastern and southeast WY: High Wind Warnings through tonight. Gusts 60-65 mph. I-25, I-80, I-90 impacted.

— Much of western CO; adjacent southeast UT; north-central NM : Winter Storm Warnings, Watches and Advisories through Saturday. Up to 2 feet of snow possible with wind gusts to 50 mph. I-70 impacted.

— South-central and southeast CO; southwest, south-central, central, northeast and east-central NM; western TX Panhandle, far-western OK Panhandle: High Wind Warnings and Watches through Friday evening. Gusts 70-75 mph. I-25, I-40 impacted.

— West-central SD: Wind Advisory this evening and tonight. Gusts to 65 mph. I-90 impacted.

— Central OK, northeast and southeast TX: Dense Fog Advisories through mid-morning. I-10, I-20, I-35, I-40, I-44 impacted.

— Northern ME: Winter Weather Advisory today for blowing and drifting snow. Wind gusts to 40 mph. I-95 impacted.
