  • Good RV Travel weather over much of the U.S. today.
  • A major winter storm will impact the Central U.S., Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Friday through Monday.
  • Strong winds over the Western Plains Friday afternoon and evening.
  • I-81, I-95 from the Carolinas to New England will have significant disruptions Sunday and Monday.

Here’s the long-range travel & RV weather outlook (updated last afternoon)

— Southern CA: Scattered rain showers today and tonight. No advisories posted.

— Northwest MT: Freezing Fog Advisory through mid-morning. I-90 impacted.

— Central MT, east of I-15: Winter Weather Advisory tonight and Friday morning. 1-3 inches snow expected.

— East-central MT: Winter Weather Advisory through mid-morning for a mix of rain and freezing rain. Untreated road surfaces may be very slick. I-94 (if untreated spots) potentially impacted.

— South-central MT: High Wind Warning through noon today. Gusts to 65 mph. I-90 impacted from Livingston to Big Timber. Also US-191.

— Southeast MT and adjacent northeast WY: Winter Weather Advisory midnight tonight through Friday evening. A couple of inches of snow and wind gusts 35-45 mph. I-90 impacted.

— North-central WY North Big Horn Basin and junction I-90/I-25: High Wind Watch late tonight through Friday afternoon. Gusts to 60 mph possible. I-90 / I-25 impacted.

— SD and WY Black Hills Border: Winter Weather Advisory tonight through late Friday evening. 2-5 inches snow with wind gusts to 45 mph. I-90 impacted.

— Southern SD, NE, KS, eastern CO, western OK and TX Panhandle: Winds from the north will gust 30-45 mph Friday afternoon and Friday night. These winds will move from the north to the south through this region. Currently no advisories posted. I-25, I-40, I-70, I-80, I-90 impacted.

— Most of ND; far-western MN; northeast and far-east SD; most of IA: Winter Storm Warnings, Watches and Advisories tonight and Friday. Accumulations generally 5-10 inches snow with gusts to 30 mph. I-29, I-35, I-80, I-90, I-94 impacted.

— Western NY near Lake Ontario: Winter Weather Advisory through mid-morning for freezing drizzle. Untreated road surfaces will be slick. I-81 (if any untreated portions) will be impacted.

— Northern NY, interior New England: Wind Chill Watch Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. Wind chill temperatures dropping to as low as -40 deg.

— Central and southern FL Peninsula: Scattered rainshowers through midday today. No advisories expected.

Estimate of total snowfall accumulations through Monday afternoon 17 January.

Although there are exact number for snowfall on this graphic, they will almost certainly change with time as the details of the storm become clear.

However, they do show the regions that will likely see substantial snowfall Sunday and Monday.

This is looking primarily to be an I-81 storm, but I-95 will certainly be impacted.
