  • An arctic air mass brings bitterly cold temperatures across much of the southern and eastern U.S.
  • Light snow accumulations are expected from the Northern Plains into the upper Great Lakes.
  • Areas of rain/snow showers are expected in the Four Corners area.
  • Some rain showers this afternoon and evening for much of the Florida Peninsula.

Here’s the long-range travel & RV weather outlook (updated Wednesday afternoon)

—Western WA and OR; northeast WA and northern ID; southern OR and adjacent northern CA: Dense Fog and Air Stagnation Advisories through midday today. I-5, I-90 impacted.

— Central CA coastal regions north and south of San Francisco Bay Area; Southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin Valleys; Sierra Nevada; most of southern and southeastern CA; central and southern NV: High Wind Warnings (mostly higher terrain) and Wind Advisories today. Expect Wind Gusts to 45-55 mph in the valleys and 50-75 mph on the higher ridge lines and passes. Major highways impacted include I-8, I-8, I-10, I-15, I-40, I-80, US-101, CA-58, CA-99.

— Central CA Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley: Dense Fog Advisory through midday today. I-5 CA-99 impacted.

— Portions of central and northwest CO: Dense Fog Advisories through mid morning. I-70 impacted.

— North-central and central CO Foothills, just west of I-25: Winter Weather Advisories this afternoon and tonight. Snow accumulations generally 3-8 inches. I-70 impacted.

— South-central CO: Winter Weather Advisory through mid morning. One or two additional inches snow possible. I-25 impacted.

— Central NM: Wind Advisory through mid morning for the Middle Rio Grande Valley including Albuquerque. Gusts to 50 mph. I-40, I-25 impacted. Cross winds will be most felt on I-25.

— Southwest ND; northwest and west-central SD: Wind Advisories late this morning through this afternoon. Gusts to 50 mph. I-90 impacted.

— Southern MN, northeast IA, northwest IL: Winter Weather Advisories this evening and tonight. 1-3 inches of snow expected. I-35, I-80 (IL), I-90 impacted.

— MI coastal Lake Michigan north of Grand Rapids; eastern Upper Peninsula: Winter Weather Advisories through this afternoon for lake effect snow. Total accumulations 2-5inches. I-75, US-31 impacted.

— East-central GA: Winter Weather Advisory through mid-morning. Some additional light freezing rain and freezing drizzle is possible: I-16, I-20 impacted.

— Central and southern FL Peninsula: Scattered to numerous rain showers and a possible thunderstorm this afternoon and evening. No advisories expected.

— Extreme coastal northeast OH, coastal PA, western NY downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario: Winter Weather Advisories for Lake Effect snow tonight through Sunday afternoon. Accumulations generally 3-5 inches downwind of Lake Erie and 7-11 inches downwind of Lake Ontario. I-79, I-81, I-90 / NY Thruway impacted.

— Extreme northeast NC; Tidewater VA; VA portion of Delmarva Peninsula: Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through mid-morning. Some lingering light snow or flurries possible. Many roads remain slick. Highways impacted include I-64, US-13, US-58. As of Saturday morning, maximum safe speed on Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is 25 mph.

— Coastal MA south of Boston including Cape Cod: Winter Weather Advisories through this afternoon. Additional accumulations up to 2 inches expected. US-6, MA-3 impacted.
