  • Fast-moving winter storm will bring heavy, accumulating snow which may combine with gusty winds to produce hazardous travel across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest into the Mid-Mississippi Valley through Saturday morning.
  • This storm will spread wintry precipitation from the Southeast into the Northeast U.S. this weekend into early next week.
  • Although I-95 is not included in the official warnings, expect 2-4″ of snow Saturday night on VA I-95 and a snow / freezing rain mix on NC I-95, also Saturday night. Precipitation changes to rain on I-95 on Sunday.
  • I-81 will see much more snow than I-95 for this storm.

Here’s the long-range travel & RV weather outlook (updated Wednesday afternoon)

— South-central, central and northeast WA; northwest OR; northern ID; northwest MT: Dense Fog and Freezing Fog Advisories today through midday. I-5(OR), I-15(MT), I-84, I-90 impacted.

— Central CA San Joaquin Valley: Dense Fog Advisory through midday today. I-5, CA-99 impacted.

— Central and southern CA, especially coastal regions: Rain and rain showers Saturday. No advisories expected.

— Central CA San Luis Obispo Coast: Wind Advisory through midday today. Gusts to 45 mph. US-101, CA-1 impacted.

— Southern CA Coastal Ranges north of San Diego Country: Wind Advisories through Saturday afternoon. Gusts. 50-55 mph. I-5, I-10, I-15 impacted.

— Central MT east of I-15: Winter Weather Advisory through midmorning. Up to 2 inches additional snow.

— Southeast MT, northeast WY: Winter Weather Advisory today. Light snow, blowing snow and maybe some freezing drizzle. Wind gusts 35-55 mph. Snow accumulations 1-2 inches. I-90 impacted.

— Northeast WY junction I-90/I-25: High Wind Warning today. Gusts to 60 mph. I-90 / I-25 impacted.

— Southwest ND, western (excluding Black Hills) and central SD: High Wind Warnings and Advisories through this evening. Wind gusts 45 mph except 60-70 mph over western SD: I-90, I-94 impacted.

— East-central and southeast CO; south-central and southwest KS; most of OK, northeast and eastern NM; most of TX except eastern and western-most portions of the state: High Winds move through this region starting midday today through Saturday. High winds will end north to south. Wind gusts generally 55-65 mph. Highest gusts expected over CO, KS and the OK and TX Panhandles. I-10, I-20, I-25, I-30, I-35, I-40, I-44, I-45, I-70 impacted.

— Most of ND except southwest corner; central and eastern SD; western and southern MN; southwest WI; eastern NE; eastern KS; IA; MO; western IL; extreme northeast OK and northwest AR: Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories through Saturday. Storm will end early morning hours on Saturday in the north, and by Saturday evening in the south. Accumulations 5-10 inches over ND, northeast SD, southwest MN, IA and northeast MO, and 2-5 inches elsewhere. Winds may gust 30-40 mph. I-29, I-35, I-44, I-55, I-70, I-80, I-90, I-94 all impacted.

— Northern AR; most of TN; central and eastern KY; northeast GA; upstate SC; central and western NC (west of I-95); WV; southeast OH; western VA; western MD; central and western PA; western NY: Winter Storm Watches starting Saturday evening and night in the southern portions of this region and Sunday evening in the northern portions. The storm will end Sunday in the southern portions and Monday in the northern portions. Heaviest snows (6-10 inches) likely over western NC, western VA, WV, western MD, central and western PA and western NY. Central NC may see significant freezing rain on top of 1-3 inches of snow. These Watches are just to the west of I-95. Major highways impacted include I-24, I-40, I-64, I-65, I-66, I-68, I-70, I-76 / PA Turnpike, I-77, I-79, I-80, I-81, I-85, I-90 / NY Thruway, I-99.

— Upstate NY, VT, northern NH, northern ME: Wind Chill Warnings through midday Saturday. Wind chill temperatures -25 to -40 deg F.

— RI, eastern MA: High Wind Warnings (Cape Cod) and Advisories midday today through early Saturday morning. Wind gusts 55 mph except up to 70 mph on Cape Cod. I-495, I-95 impacted.

— Northern coastal ME: Wind Chill and Winter Weather Advisories this evening through Saturday. 2-6 inches snow and wind gusts 45-55 mph.

I-95 corridor will generally see 1-4″ of snow in NC and VA before changing over to rain.

Expect significant freezing rain in NC between I-95 and the mountains late Saturday night and Sunday morning.

I-81 will see heavy snow virtually the entire length of the highway.
