Extended outlooks are more general in nature than the daily short term forecasts. Beyond a week, there is often significant uncertainty in the location and intensity of specific weather events. I will note where there is less, or greater, confidence than normal in these extended outlooks.

Here is the latest short term weather forecast.
- Central U.S. warms up while New England and the Northeast cool down next week.
- After Friday, the West Coast Weather quiets down for a while
- Although cold in the East, no new major snowstorms on the horizon; Friday’s storm will be an ‘average’ nor’easter.
Outlook for Friday – Sunday 7-9 January:
— Nor’easter snowstorm for the Northeast (appropriately enough) on Friday. Kind of an average storm. Plowable, but not crippling.
— Expect another strong, wet storm for the OR and WA coast with snow pushing again into the Northern Rockies.
— Saturday will see some rain and showers develop over the lower Mississippi Valley.
— By Sunday the rain will expand to most of the East; expect an icy mix for parts of the Northeast.
Outlook for Monday – Wednesday 10-12 January:
— Monday and Tuesday look to be relatively quiet weather-wise, for the first time in quite a while.
— On Wednesday, look for a West Coast storm, but weaker than the systems of the previous week.
— Rain develops over TX and spreads northeastward to the Midwest. Possibly some icy conditions by the Great Lakes.
— The Arctic cold air continues to drift eastward. On Tuesday and Wednesday, it will be New England’s turn to live in the ice box. High temperatures in much of interior and northern New England will struggle to get above 0 degrees F.
