Travel & RV Weather Extended Outlook updated p.m. Wednesday 29 December 2021

Extended outlooks are more general in nature than the daily short term forecasts. Beyond a week, there is often significant uncertainty in the location and intensity of specific weather events. I will note where there is less, or greater, confidence than normal in these extended outlooks.

Here is the latest short term weather forecast.

  • West Coast gets a break this weekend. Storms return to the Pacific Northwest on Monday.
  • Potential for severe weather outbreak across the mid-South and Southeast on Friday and Saturday
  • Still no major snowstorms for the East, but there is some potential the weekend of 8-9 January.

Outlook for Friday – Sunday 31 December – 2 January:

— Strong storm in the Southwest on Friday moves out across the Plain, Ohio Valley, and up the St. Lawrence Valley by Sunday. Expect rain, showers and thunderstorms to the south and east of the system, several inches of snow across the Central Plains into the Midwest, and the potential for severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes in the mid-South and Southeast on Friday and Saturday.

— The West is quiet through the period for the first time since mid-December.

Outlook for Monday – Wednesday 3-5 January:

— West Coast storms resume, with the center of action aimed at WA, OR and northern CA.

— By Tuesday, snow spreads into the Northern Rockies, then into the Northern Plains.

— Strong storm on Wednesday appears to stay just north of the Great Lakes, but will likely impact New England with some rain.

— There are hints, but only hints of a more significant snow event for the northeast starting over the weekend of 8-9 January. We’ve seen this setup before this winter, only to have the warm air prevail. We’ll see what happens, but it does look to be the next significant storm for the East.
