Extended outlooks are more general in nature than the daily short term forecasts. Beyond a week, there is often significant uncertainty in the location and intensity of specific weather events. I will note where there is less, or greater, confidence than normal in these extended outlooks.

- The active weather this coming week is mostly in the Upper-Midwest and East. Except for Washington State, the West is relatively quiet and dry.
- Chance for some wintry precipitation over the Mid-Atlantic towards the end of the week.
- Very cold over the Northwest on Tuesday and almost as cold again on Friday.
- This patter of a cool east, average to above average west and modest precipitation events looks to be with us through much of January.
Outlook for Tuesday – Thursday 11-13 January:
— Rain for northwest WA Tuesday – Thursday.
— Very cold over the Northeast on Tuesday; highs below zero deg F for interior New England
— On Thursday, and Alberta-clipper type storm brings light snow to the Great Lakes and Northeast. Some rain to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.
— Mild temperatures over the Central U.S. on Thursday. KS and CO will see highs in the 60’s and TX will reach the 70’s.
Outlook for Friday – Sunday 14-16 January:
— On Friday, low pressure over the Northern Plains brings snow to the Upper Midwest and strong winds over the western Central Plains.
— This storm strengthens and moves toward the NC coast Friday night and Saturday, bringing rain to the southeast, a rain/snow/ice mix to the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-South, and mostly snow to WV, MD and PA.
— Very cold air returns to the Northeast on Saturday with single digit high temperatures for New England.
— Expect cooler than normal temperatures this weekend over the South with frost on the LA/MS Coast and highs in the 40’s and 50’s for FL north of Orlando.

Big change for the west — almost no precipitation this coming week.Snowfall amounts through Sunday 16 January. Hints of a modest northeast snowstorm this coming weekend. Wind gusts Friday afternoon 14 January. Strong winds coming off the Rockies onto the western Central Plains. I-40, I-70, I-80, I-90 will all be impacted.
