Travel & RV Weather Extended Outlook through Sunday 6 March

Extended outlooks are more general in nature than the daily short term forecasts. Beyond a week, there is often significant uncertainty in the location and intensity of specific weather events. I will note where there is less, or greater, confidence than normal in these extended outlooks.

  • Rain and high elevation snows for the Pacific Northwest for much of the week.
  • Unsettled weather moves into California by Thursday.
  • Significant late-winter storm for the Rockies and central portion of the U.S. next weekend.
  • Warm weather south of I-70 from Baltimore to Denver most of this week; colder than normal temperatures for the west starting Thursday.

Outlook for Tuesday – Thursday 1-3 March:

— On Tuesday, rain for the Pacific Northwest. Some snow for interior and northern New England.

— Wednesday brings more rain for the Pacific Northwest.

— Snow develops over the Dakotas

— The next system out of eastern Canada brings more snow to NY and New England.

— Wednesday will be a warm day south of I-70 from Baltimore to Denver

— On Thursday, the rain moves southward along the West Coast to central and northern CA.


Outlook for Friday – Sunday 4-6 March:

— Rain and snow Friday for CA, the Great Basin, Inter-Mountain West and the Rockies.

— Low pressure develops Friday afternoon east of the CO Rockies.

— On Saturday, the low moves into the Central Plains.

— Extensive snow in the western High Plains, and northern and central Rockies.

— Rain, freezing rain and snow across the Midwest and Great Lakes.

— By Sunday, the storm moves through the Great Lakes and into Canada

— Heavy rain for the Northeast; some snow and ice for northern New England.

— Snow continues over the central and southern Rockies.

— Also a Sunday, a new low pressure forms over eastern TX. Rain for the Southern Plains, Mid-South and Gulf Coast States.
