Three things to know about weather for RVers and travelers Thursday 17 August


  • Marginal severe weather threat over the Great Lakes and Northeast today and Friday.
  • Chance for flooding rains over the Southwest from Hurricane Hilary this weekend.
  • Heat shifts from the Northwest, to the Central and Southeast later this week into the weekend.

These are the most significant weather impacts to RV travel over the next two to three days. I do not list every area of rain, showers, or breezy winds. (It would be exhausting for both of us!). Please check out the animations and graphics for a good depiction of the weather along your route.

Pacific:

— Interior WA; western and northern OR; north-central CA: Excessive Heat Warnings and Advisories continue today. High temperatures 96-108 deg F. I-5, I-82, I-84, I-90, US-97, US-395 impacted.

— Central and western WA; northern ID; south-central OR and adjacent northern CA: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings today and Friday. Hot, dry, unstable conditions will allow for rapid fire growth. I-5, I-82, I-84, I-90, US-97, US-395 potentially impacted.

— CA Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys: Heat Advisories continue today. High temperatures 100-107 deg F. I-5, I-80, CA-99 impacted.

— Portions of southern CA interior deserts CA/AZ Colorado River Valley: Excessive Heat Warnings and Advisories continue today. High temperatures 100-115 deg F. I-8, I-10, I-15 impacted.

— Southern CA and southern NV: Slight risk of flash floods on Saturday due to rainfall from Hurricane Hilary.

Mountain:

— Portions of Northwest MT: Red Flag (fire danger) Warnings this afternoon and again Friday afternoon. Wind gusts to 35 mph. I-15, US-93 potentially impacted.

— Northern and west-central ID and adjacent northwest MT: Heat Advisories continue today. High temperatures 100-110 deg below 2500 feet. I-84, I-90 impacted.

— Most of MT east of the Rockies: Heat Advisories through Friday. High temperatures around 100 deg F.

— Western, central, and northern MT; eastern ID; northwest and southeast WY: Strong winds Friday afternoon and evening. Gusts 30-40 mph. I-15, I-25, I-90 impacted.

— South-central AZ: Excessive Heat Warnings continue today. High temperatures 108-115 deg F. I-8, I-10, I-17 impacted.

— Southwest and far-western AZ: Slight risk of flash floods on Saturday due to rainfall from Hurricane Hilary.

Central:

— Much of MN, northern IA, WI: Moderate to occasionally heavy wildfire smoke today and Friday from Canadian wildfires.

— Much of TX; south-central OK; southern and eastern LA; southwest MS: A combination of Excessive Heat Warnings (central TX) and Advisories today and Friday. Temperatures and heat index values 103-113 deg F. I-10, I-12, I-20, I-30, I-35, I-40, I-45, I-49, I-55 impacted

Eastern:

— MI Lower Peninsula, central and northern IN; most of OH: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible today. Wind is the primary hazard. I-69, I-70, I-71, I-74, I-75, I-76, I-77, I-80, I-90, I-94, I-96, IN Toll Road, OH Turnpike potentially impacted.

— Central and eastern PA and adjacent NY; NH; central and eastern MD; DC: Strong thunderstorms may turn briefly severe tonight. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out. I-70, I-76, I-78, I-80, I-81, I-83, I-84, I-86, I-87, I-95, NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, NY Thruway potentially impacted.

— Southern ME; NH; VT; MA; CT; RI; eastern NY: Isolated severe thunderstorms possible Friday. While damaging wind gusts will be the primary hazard, hail and even a brief tornado are also possible. I-84, I-87, I-89, I-90, I-91, I-93, I-95, NY Thruway, Mass Pike potentially impacted.
